Safety guidelines and best practices

The mountains offer incredible adventures, but it's important to stay safe while you explore. Here are some tips to keep in mind when walking or snowshoeing:
  1. Take responsibility: Marked routes aren’t supervised, so your safety is in your hands.
  2. Know your trails: Some paths open in summer may be closed in winter. Always carry a winter trail map or an IGN map.
  3. Seek guidance: If you’re a beginner, consider joining guided walks offered by professionals (check the program at the Tourist Office).
  4. Choose wisely: Select your route based on your skill level, fitness, and current weather conditions.
  5. Trust your instincts: If you're unsure about a trail, it’s best to turn back rather than risk getting into a tricky situation.
  6. Buddy up: Avoid hiking alone and let someone know your route.
  7. Timing is key: Don't set out too late—aim to return before dark.
  8. Check your gear: Make sure you have proper footwear and warm clothing before you head out.
  9. Stay on track: For your safety and that of others, stick to marked paths.
  10. Stay hydrated and protected: Remember to eat, drink, and shield yourself from the sun and cold.
  11. Be aware of snow conditions: Snow stability can change. Check in with the piste service and follow their safety guidelines.
  12. Cross carefully: When navigating Alpine and Nordic ski areas, be cautious. Don’t stop on the slopes, and always look both ways before crossing. Remember, pedestrian traffic, snowshoeing, and dogs are not allowed on the slopes (as per municipal regulations).
